Senior Fitness Programs Offered Free by Local Council
Tallahassee residents aged 60 and older gain access to no-cost group exercise sessions run by the city through Leon County Parks and Recreation.
How we reported this

The Tallahassee City Council approved free senior fitness programs that begin July 15 at multiple city sites.
These sessions address rising health needs among older adults in a city where the share of residents over 65 reached 14 percent in the latest Leon County census update. Group classes replace solo routines that many seniors dropped after the 2024 heat wave cut outdoor activity.
Venues and Schedules
Classes meet at Cascades Park on Monroe Street every Monday and Thursday at 8 a.m. and at the Leon County Senior Center on Apalachee Parkway on Tuesdays and Fridays at 9 a.m. Instructors lead chair yoga, balance drills and light resistance work that lasts 45 minutes. The city added a third location at Tom Brown Park near the Southwood neighborhood starting August 1 to cut travel time for east-side residents.
Participants need only bring a water bottle and wear comfortable shoes. Registration opens at the Parks and Recreation office on South Calhoun Street or through the county website with a simple form that asks for age and emergency contact.
Numbers Behind the Rollout
City budget documents list $87,000 set aside for instructor pay and mats this fiscal year. Last spring a pilot run at Cascades Park drew 312 unique seniors across eight weeks, with 78 percent returning for at least four sessions. Average attendance per class hit 24 people, up from 11 in the 2023 version that charged $5 per meeting.
Residents who want to join can call the Parks and Recreation main line at 850-891-3866 or stop by the office between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays. Spots fill on a first-come basis, and the city posts weekly updates on its Facebook page for any weather-related changes.
